How it Works

Understanding Veneers

Dental veneers are a special type of dental prosthesis designed to fit perfectly over the front chewing surface of your tooth. They are usually made of porcelain or resin, and they are designed to cover up your front teeth to improve cosmetic issues. They are matched to the color of your surrounding teeth and custom-made to enhance tooth shape. Once they are permanently affixed, they cover up a wide range of issues including stains, chips, gaps, and uneven teeth.

How Can Veneers Improve My Smile?

Common Cosmetic Issues

Veneers can be used to treat almost every common cosmetic issue, from small or misshapen teeth, chipped teeth, gaps in your smile, slightly-crooked and crowded teeth, to serious stains. In just two quick appointments, you can restore your smile with minimally-invasive, long-lasting porcelain veneers.

What to Expect

The Veneer Placement Process

After you’ve been approved as a good candidate for veneers, the placement process usually takes two appointments. At your first appointment, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed, and a small amount of enamel will be removed from the teeth receiving veneers.  This enamel must be removed to ensure that your veneers fit perfectly.Next, impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to a dental lab where your permanent veneers will be made. In the meantime, we will give you a set of temporary veneers to wear until your permanent prostheses arrive.

When your veneers arrive at our office, we will check them to ensure a perfect fit. Finally, they will be permanently affixed to your front teeth using special dental cement. You’ll leave our office with an enhanced, beautiful smile.

Durability, Care, and Maintenance

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With proper care, veneers will last at least 10 years and it’s not uncommon for porcelain veneers to last more than 20 years. Veneers do not require any special care, but taking a few precautions can help ensure that they last a long time. Be sure to brush and floss properly, and see the team at Rio Vista Family Dentistry & Orthodontics for regular six-month cleanings. In addition, it’s also important to avoid chewing very hard foods (ice, nuts, etc.) with your veneers. If you grind your teeth at night, you should get a night guard to prevent damaging your veneers. Avoid using your teeth as tools to do things like open bags and packaging, as this can also damage your new smile.
