Coming in for your teeth cleaning & oral exams every six months is the most important part of preventive dentistry. One of our dental hygienists will clean away plaque and tartar, buff, polish, and floss your teeth to remove any remaining debris. Dr. Reyes or Dr. Bonifacio will examine your mouth to look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and any other oral health issues. If necessary, we may recommend taking a set of x-rays to catch issues that may not be visible to the naked eye.
The first stage of tooth decay is called a “soft spot.” These spots often appear whitish and occur when the enamel is decaying, but a cavity (hole in the tooth) has not yet appeared. Fluoride treatments can be used to prevent cavities, and reverse minor tooth decay. This because fluoride has the unique ability to strengthen teeth encourage remineralization. Fluoride treatments take only a few minutes. A fluoride-rich solution will be painted onto the affected tooth and left in place. After a few minutes the fluoride solution will be wiped away, completing the treatment.
If you are susceptible to cavities, dental sealants may be a good option for you. Dental sealants are typically used on the rear teeth (molars & premolars). They consist of a special dental resin, which is applied to your teeth after they have been cleaned. This resin is hardened into a strong, plastic layer which protects the enamel from oral bacteria, acid, and food debris. In turn, this helps prevent cavities. Sealants take only a few minutes to apply, and can provide up to 10 years of protection from cavities.
Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is caused by poor oral hygiene and affects nearly half of all American adults. To ensure that minor cases of gum disease do not progress and do irreversible harm to your gums and teeth, you should get periodontal care right away. At our office, we use antibiotics and deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth and gums, and restore your periodontal health.
Nightguards are useful if you grind your teeth (bruxism). They consist of a custom-fitted plastic guard, which prevents your teeth from grinding, and protects the enamel from damage and wear and tear.
We also offer custom-made mouthguards for those who play contact sports. Our mouthguards surround and cushion your teeth, ensuring you do not have to worry about oral injuries while playing your favorite sports.
If your wisdom teeth erupt incorrectly, they can cause pain, discomfort, and risk of infection. Plus, if you have had orthodontic treatment, wisdom teeth growing in improperly can cause crowding and undo years of progress and treatment. At our office, Dr. Reyes and Dr. Bonifacio specialize in gentle wisdom teeth extractions to keep your smile looking and feeling its best.
