At our office, Dr. Campillo also specializes in Invisalign and ClearCorrect, two of the leading clear plastic aligner treatments. Clear aligners are completely removable, and they look and feel like a retainer or a mouthguard.
When worn, clear aligners like Invisalign and ClearCorrect are nearly invisible to the naked eye, and they do not affect your speech. These aligners are also removable, which means you can eat and drink with no dietary restrictions. Treatment with Invisalign and ClearCorrect is also typically faster than braces, with most patients completing treatment in under a year. However, treatment time may vary depending on your case, so we recommend seeing Dr. Peralta for a consultation.
Orthodontic treatment does much more than just provide you with a beautiful smile. Aesthetics are important, of course, but a straighter smile has a number of benefits for your oral health, too.
First, it’s easier to clean between your teeth when they are evenly spaced and not crowded. This also helps prevent cavities and gum disease more effectively because it makes proper oral hygiene much more simple. Also, correcting your bite can help protect your teeth from damage. If you have an overbite or underbite, the improper tooth contact could result in premature wear and tear on your teeth. Orthodontic treatment can help prevent teeth grinding and chipping of the teeth.
There are three primary reasons you may need orthodontic treatment, and they’re all closely related. First, you may need orthodontic treatment if you have serious bite problems, also known as “malocclusion.”
Bite problems such as an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite can cause a lot of different problems like speech impediments, difficulty chewing properly, and premature wear & tear to the teeth. They can also negatively affect your appearance. Underbites, for example, cause your jaw to protrude more than normal.
The second reason is due to misaligned teeth. Even if you have no serious bite issues related to your jaw, you may have crooked or crowded teeth that do not fit together properly. Again, this can negatively affect your appearance, and it can also affect your oral health. For example, very crooked or crowded teeth can be hard to clean, leading to a higher risk of cavities and gum disease.
Finally, some people may choose to get orthodontic treatment merely as a way to improve their appearance. Teeth that are slightly crooked or uneven may not cause any major oral health issues, but still may make you feel self-conscious about how you look, so this is a completely legitimate reason to get orthodontic treatment. This kind of orthodontic treatment is often paired with other cosmetic dentistry treatments at Rio Vista Family Dentistry, like veneers.
No matter what sort of orthodontic treatment you get, from Invisalign to braces, the process will begin in the same way. You’ll come to our office for an appointment with Dr. Patricia Campillo, our expert orthodontist.
Dr. Campillo will perform a comprehensive oral exam and will take x-rays and digital images of your mouth to assess the extent of your orthodontic issues, and to learn more about your overall oral health. Once your exam is over, she will recommend the appropriate orthodontic treatment.
From here on, the specifics of your treatment will differ depending on your treatment. If you get Invisalign, Dr. Campillo will work with Invisalign to create your treatment plan, and you’ll come back in a few weeks to get your first several sets of Invisalign trays, and instructions about how to wear them. You’ll come back every 4-6 weeks for a checkup and to get your next several sets of aligners.
If you’re getting braces, you’ll schedule a follow-up where your braces will be attached by Dr. Campillo and adjusted for the first time. At this time, you’ll also get information about how to care for your braces, and lifestyle changes you’ll need to make during treatment. Then, you’ll come back about every 6 weeks to have your braces checked and adjusted.
The total treatment time may vary. Some patients may be able to correct their orthodontic issues in less than 12 months, while others with more significant problems may need to continue their treatment plan for 2-3 years.
